Our Mission
Ready to Read’s mission is to provide evidence-based reading interventions to underprivileged students in Orange County. Our goal is to provide full or partial scholarships to low-income students with learning disabilities so they can receive the gold standard of reading interventions and help them reach their academic potential.
Our Story
We are a non-profit organization that seeks to provide struggling learners with access to
evidence-based reading interventions. In order to remediate language-based learning
disabilities, such as dyslexia, it requires an abundance of resources. What happens when these
resources are not available? Children do not have access to the curriculum in order to support
their learning. Without remediation, many children will continue to struggle in school and are at
risk of dropping out of school or delinquency. This is known as the school-to-prison pipeline.
The disproportionate tendency of minors and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to
become incarcerated because of educational inequality is exacerbated by underdiagnosis and
lack of access to evidence-based interventions. The dropout rate for students with
learning disabilities is approximately 20% which is nearly three times the rate of all
students. More than half of young adults with learning disabilities have been involved
with the justice system. This is an epidemic that needs our attention.
Reading is a fundamental
right. We live in a culture where reading is the essence of our survival and allows the human
race to continue to make advances in all areas of science, medicine, and technology. Ready to
Read is a foundation in which every child is given the opportunity to meet their full academic
potential which will allow them to succeed not only in school but in life.
Literacy is not only the key to academic success, but the key to life success.
Unfortunately, there are almost 750,000 children in Orange County who are impacted by
language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Children
who do not receive the appropriate diagnosis and evidence-based intervention also have a
much higher incidence of anxiety and depression. Given the advances in cognitive
neuroscience, we know how to teach kids to read, write, spell, and do math regardless of their
learning disability. Our evidence-based interventions, small class size, and many years of
serving children with learning disabilities for over 30 years have allowed us to leave a legacy for
the underserved children of Orange County.
